AQE Applauds SED Commissioner Rosa’s Key Funding Step for East Ramapo Public Schools

New York City, N.Y. (August 1, 2024) – In response to SED Chancellor Betty Rosa’s decision directing the East Ramapo school board to increase the tax levy for the 2024-2025 fiscal year, the Alliance for Quality Education released the following statement:

“AQE applauds Commissioner Betty Rosa’s directive for the East Ramapo school board to increase local taxes to the maximum allowable amount, ensuring that additional funds are dedicated to addressing the critical needs in public schools,” said Zakiyah Shaakir-Ansari, Co-Executive Director, Alliance for Quality Education.

“This decision, which follows an appeal filed by a local public school parent and the NYCLU, reflects the powerful organizing led by East Ramapo public school parents, educators, students, and community advocates for educational justice across New York State. The increased funding is essential to addressing longstanding issues such as inadequate classroom resources, crumbling facilities, lead contamination in the water, and a lack of essential programs. While legal challenges and potential delays are anticipated, it is crucial there is a sustained and continuous push towards comprehensive changes in governance and oversight. AQE remains committed to playing our role in supporting the public school community to ensure these necessary improvements are fully realized and sustained for all students.”
