NEW YORK, N.Y. (November 4, 2022) — Following the release of the Fair Student Funding Working Group’s final report and recommendations on Friday, the public education advocacy organization Alliance for Quality Education released the following statement:
“The Working Group’s final report represents an initial effort to make some improvements to the Fair Student Funding formula. We know that a deep dive into determining transformative changes to the formula is an ongoing process that will take years, not months, but we are confident that the recommendations in today’s report provide foundational first steps.
“Money matters to students’ success. We appreciate the Independent Budget Office’s participation in the process, modeling how additional weightings could be included in the formula, instead of just shuffling money around. We need to make sure our most vulnerable students — including LGBTQIA students, students with IEPs, newcomers — have the resources they need to succeed.
“While work remains to be done, the FSF Working Group process was transparent and inclusive, and provided a model for how to do this work going forward, and who should be at the table. We look forward to continuing to work with DOE, advocates, parents, students, community members, city council and the mayor to create true equity and adequacy for New York City’s public schools.”
